If I, could give you the world
The seas would overflow my glass, into your open palms
Cupped, as though to welcome the rain
But this rain will be saline – tears caught on a breeze
Like me, how they long
To whisper their secrets in your ears
Oh, how I will envy them, they who may caress your lips
And leave little trails down your cheeks
If I, could give you these dreams
I would serve you the cheese moon, on a transcendental plate
Just to watch the moon-dust gild your lovely face
I’d wish you wings, to soar, into the Milky Way
Across the endless summer sky
Where the stars and you could play
And the sunshine in my bowl would pale
Against the joy-light in your gaze
If I, could give you our youth
Those ideals that were tempted away, into more convivial minds
Before we could bid them stay
I would give you a heart yet unbroken, a love yet to fade
Show you the memories that hang where we lay
Like the wind in my door, that still carries your scent
The musk of the dust-carpeted floor
And the taste of regret
If I, could give you my past
I would give you a blank slate, so you could make who I was
And keep me that way
Neither the imaginary heroine, nor the wayward child
None shall shape me, but your gentle hands
My faults and mistakes, to be smoothed away – the potter’s clay
But even in this giving, we are changed again
So it will never be the same
If I, could give you more than these words
I would give you the promise they hold.
